The Jacobites had sought to reclaim the English Crown since
the abdication of James VII of Scotland, (II of England), in 1689. With 5
uprising in 56 years, including the taking of Derby in December 1745 (only 130
miles from London) and culminating with the Battle of Culloden (16 April 1746),
this gave the English government the impetus to unleash a wave of brutality and
ethnic cleansing of such proportion, that the scars are still visible today.
