Born To Be Wild

Danger Zone

Motorcycles — Jets — Bombs

From the Spring of 1971 until the Spring of 1973, during my Heyford years at RAF Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, England, a 1970 BSA A65 Lightning like these pictured here, was my primary form of transportation. In 1972, I rode to Stockholm, Sweden, and back.

"BSA stands for Birmingham Small Arms (Co. Ltd.). A significant armaments manufacturer, BSA and others in that industry, had the technology to produce internal combustion engines, upon its invention at the turn of the 20th century. BSA became the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer. In the early 1970s, BSA was taken over by the Norton Villiers Triumph Group."

Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once and
Explode into space

I like smokin' lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once and
Explode into space

Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die

Born to be wild
Born to be wild

"Born to be Wild" was used on the soundtrack of the film "Easy Rider" (Released: 14, July 1969). The film tells the story of two young men, Wyatt (played by Fonda) and Billy (Hopper), who "went looking for America but couldn't find it anywhere." Some see the film as representing the embodiment of the hippie ideals and lifestyle of the counterculture of the 1960s. An alcoholic ACLU lawyer George Hanson (played by Jack Nicholson) comments: "This used to be a helluva good country. I can't understand what's gone wrong with it". The film ends with a graphic representation of insecurity and intolerance in certain parts of America.

General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark

General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark

This aircraft was one of the more controversial aircraft ever to fly, yet it achieved one of the safest operational records of any aircraft in USAF history and became a highly effective all-weather interdiction aircraft. Thanks to the men and women who designed, manufactured, flew and maintained her, of which I was one.

Revvin' up your engine
Listen to her howlin' roar
Metal under tension
Beggin' you to touch and go
Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone

Spreadin' out her wings tonight
She got you jumpin' off the track
And shovin' into overdrive
Highway to the Danger Zone
I'll take you
Right into the Danger Zone

She'll never say hello to you
Until you get it on the red line overload
You'll never know what you can do
Until you get it up as high as you can go

Out along the edges
Always where I burn to be
The further on the edge
The hotter the intensity
Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take you
Right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone
Right into the Danger Zone

Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take you
Right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone
Right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take you
Right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone
Right into the Danger Zone
Right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone
Right into the Danger Zone
Highway to ...
